Interesting Facts About Furniture Sunday,August 29th, 2010 Everything in your home is a piece of furniture, except of course the walls and floors. It's a natural part of our lives, but, have you ever given thought of where and how it all came from or emerged? The history of furniture is very interesting. Different civilizations came up with their own brand and furnishings. For instance, in the prehistoric times, when people were learning farming, they constructed their houses and basic furniture needs with stones. The village of Sara Brae in Scotland is a preserved example of this. Then, there was the ancient Egyptian furniture; the rich lived in large comfortable houses with furniture made from wood, while the poor in houses made of mud and furniture made of stones. The pinnacles of the Greek civilization were the wooden chests and couches. What Is Wicker? Family Friendly Furniture When furnishing a home, most people do not even consider all aspects of the pieces of furniture they are placing in their home. One thing you should always consider is the safety of the furniture. Along with proper placement of the furniture, you also need to look at the furniture to be sure it is something suitable for your needs. If you have an infant or toddler, you are going to make sure you have no sharp edges on any end tables, coffee tables, television stands, or even desks. With a small child learning to walk or stand the last thing you need is them being injured on the furniture. The next thing you want to make sure of is that your couch is not too high. I've sat on couches that my feet could not reach the ground, and honestly when I purchased a new living room set, height was one of my concerns. With having a small child, they are just learning how to climb on and off of things, so the lower the better. As I mentioned before, you may also want to consider the placement of the furniture. You have to remember that kids have a lot of energy, and more then likely will be playing in this area at some point. With wide open space, you do not have to worry too much about the corners on end tables if the area they can play in is large enough to keep them away. Another thing you want to watch is small bookshelves or dvd racks. They should contain a warning that if a child would happen to pull themselves up on the shelf, they will collapse potentially on the child which could cause harm. I also do not reccomend purchases a flat screen tv without mounting it on a very high wall. Children can easily tip these due to the light weight of the tv, and this also causes a safety hazzard. When shopping to furnish a house, you need to take these things into account. Kid proofing a house does not require cages around things, just some careful planning. Just remember to put some thought into these things before purchasing a piece of furniture! Put yourself in the shoes of a small child before you decide if the furniture is right for your needs.
